Marseille soap has a long history going back many centuries. It comes from Aleppo soap. The manufacture of soap from vegetable oils has been known since antiquity, but it was in Marseille that soap was first produced on a large scale in the 14th century.
Traditional Marseille soap then became very popular throughout Europe and beyond, thanks to its quality and purity. For centuries, Marseille soapmakers have used the same artisanal manufacturing method, with simple, natural ingredients such as Provençal olive oil and soda ash. The most popular and best known is the cube.
The color of the pure olive oil cube ranges from olive green to bronze green, and can sometimes be non-uniform. There’s also a white cube version containing less olive oil, but still exclusively vegetable oils, dedicated more particularly to linen care.
In this form, it can be used for washing hands, body, clothes, dishes, pets and even floors. Cube Marseille soap is dense and solid, so it lasts a long time. To use it, simply wet it lightly. Then, rub it between your hands or on a sponge to obtain a soft, creamy lather. It’s important to rinse the soap well after use to avoid residue.
